Paris Climate Agreement Two Degrees

By on December 14, 2020 in Uncategorized

“We have the technology and the knowledge to make these emission reductions, but what is missing are policies and regulations strong enough to achieve this,” Watson said in an interview. “Right now, the world is on a path between 3 and 4 degrees C (5.5 and 7F) by the end of the century. The widespread failure to combat the existential threat of climate change has led more than 11,000 scientists from 153 countries to sign a “World Scientists” Warning of a Climate Emergency declaration. Whatever the report on climate promises, the statement begins: “Scientists have a moral obligation to clearly warn humanity of any catastrophic threat and to say it as it is.” The EU and its member states are among the nearly 190 parties to the Paris Agreement. The EU formally ratified the agreement on 5 October 2016, allowing it to enter into force on 4 November 2016. In order for the agreement to enter into force, at least 55 countries representing at least 55% of global emissions had to file their ratification instruments. The alliance of small island states and least developed countries, whose economies and livelihoods are most affected by the negative effects of climate change, has taken the initiative to address losses and damage as a particular theme of the Paris Agreement. [33] However, developed countries were concerned that looking at the issue as a separate issue that goes beyond adaptation would create additional climate funding or imply legal responsibility for catastrophic climate events. Carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane are gases that accumulate in the atmosphere and prevent radiation from the Earth`s surface to space, creating what is called the greenhouse effect. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the main international panel on this issue, the concentration of these thermal gases has increased significantly since pre-industrial times and has not been observed for at least 800,000 years. Carbon dioxide (the main cause of climate change) has increased by 40 per cent, nitrous oxide by 20 per cent and methane by 150 per cent since 1750, mainly due to the burning of dirty fossil fuels. The IPCC says it is “extremely likely” that these emissions have been primarily responsible for the rise in global temperatures since the 1950s.

Meanwhile, deforestation and forest degradation have also contributed to their fair share of global carbon emissions. It provides “another solid piece of scientifically sound evidence to justify public calls for more action from governments and businesses,” says climate scientist Bill Hare of Berlin`s climate analysis. Hare was not involved in the report, but contributes to the Climate Action Tracker, which conducts scientific analyses of climate policy and commitments. Adaptation issues were at the forefront of the paris agreement. Collective long-term adaptation objectives are included in the agreement and countries must be accountable for their adaptation measures, making adaptation a parallel element of the mitigation agreement. [46] Adaptation objectives focus on improving adaptive capacity, resilience and vulnerability limitation. [47] The American people believe in climate change and are determined to address it. To contribute to the goals of the agreement, countries presented comprehensive national climate change plans (national fixed contributions, NDC).
