Wmu Collective Bargaining Agreement

By on April 15, 2021 in Uncategorized

The challenge for the WMU-AAUP is to encourage the administration to recognize the precarious situation of these people. We are convinced that the BoT and WMU administration believe in common governance and academic freedom. The provision of the mandate route, which is assured in the 2017-2020 agreement, will enable these people to participate fully in our university, contribute and better organize it. The union is asking the administration to work with the faculty to address the reality that it is time to give our advisors the support they need to provide full support to our students. Mark said it well when he said, “We have to take care of the people who take care of our students.” The university administration and representatives of the Western Chapter of the American Association of University Teachers obtained preliminary agreement on the contract May 17, after publication, and union members ratified the contract on May 21. Thank you very much for your time. The WMU-AAUP is a faculty voice that is not always easy to hear. A few days before our meeting, the Kalamazoo Gazette presented an article entitled “The Use of Orientation Students is On the Rise,” subtitled “More children at the university are turning to schools for help for their mental health, and schools are struggling to meet demand.” (December 1, 2019.) This article describes the gap between the needs and resources available at many university sites. The WMU is not alone in trying to find ways to counter the number of students in need of psychiatric treatment, and we understand that the administration is working on this challenge. Parents: “Significant” layoffs always come to Western Michigan University as budgets cut by 20% This is some specific data I`ll share on the mental health of university students from a national data set.

There is a marked trend in increasing percentages of students who experience overwhelming anxiety (30.7% of the last 2 weeks, 14.1% 30 days) and felt so depressed that it was difficult to function (17.5% of the last 2 weeks, 8.9% of the last 30 days). There is also an increase in the number of students who come to campus with diagnosed mental health problems. In this report, 24% of students report that a tradesman has a diagnosis or treatment due to anxiety and 20% to depression, and 12.3% report panic attacks in the last 12 months. About 53% of students said their academic duties were very difficult to complete.
